‘Shahensha-e-Qawwali.’

Traditionally, Qawwali has been a family business and Nusrat’s family has an unbroken tradition of performing Qawwali over 600 years. Among some of the honorary titles bestowed upon him was ‘Shahensha-e-Qawwali’ which translates as ‘The Emporer Of Qawwali’.
By the time of his death in 1993 he had had been entered into the Guinness Book Of Records for recording more Qawwali albums than any other artist.
He performed with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Eddie Vedder, Massive Attack and Michael Brook.
He also contributed to the soundtracks of countless films including ‘Dead Man Walking’, ‘Passion’ and ‘Natural Born Killers’.
In 1993 Jeff Buckley declared from the stage “Nusrat, he’s my Elvis”.
